Novartis has completed its acquisition of 85% in the Chinese vaccines firm Zhejiang Tianyuan Bio-Pharmaceutical. The deal, roughly valued at $125 million, was first announced in November 2009. Swiss drugs giant Novartis has said that the acquisition will provide it with an expanded presence in the Chinese vaccines market and also facilitate the introduction of additional Novartis’ vaccines into the country. The firms claims that China represents the world’s third largest vaccines market, with annual industry sales of over $1 billion, and the expectation of double-digit growth over coming years.

Many of the ads for “anti-radiation” potassium iodide pills flooding the Internet may be scams run by hucksters seeking to profit from the Japan nuclear scare, the Food and Drug Administration warned Thursday. “We found many different offers for potassium iodide and other products that we’re taking a look at,” says Gary Coody, the FDA’s national health fraud coordinator.

India’s No.2 drugmaker Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd said a U.S. district court has cleared the sale of its generic version of Sanofi-Aventis’ allergy medicine Allegra D24, sending its shares up nearly 4 percent. The U.S. District Court of New Jersey lifted an injunction passed last June against the Indian drugmaker from selling a copycat version of the drug, Dr Reddy’s said in a statement.

NPS Pharmaceuticals says that it’s on track to file for regulatory approval of Gattex after a late-stage study involving 86 patients demonstrated promising results for reducing the need for IV feeding among a majority of patients with short bowel syndrome. NPS now plans to file in the second half of the year and the news quickly spurred a 30 percent hike in its stock price in pre-market trading.

Merck Serono is teaming up with France’s Domain Therapeutics to take aim at a new target for Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. Novartis has submitted its meningococcal B vaccine Bexsero to the EU for marketing approval. “The Bexsero submission in the EU is an important milestone toward achieving the world’s first broad-coverage MenB vaccine through our unique multi-component approach,” said Andrin Oswald, head of Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Division. “Meningococcal disease is sudden and aggressive, leaving little time for treatment.
