J&J Recalls More Tylenol, over-the-counter drugs

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N) recalled more Tylenol and other over-the-counter drugs on Thursday after they were linked to a musty or moldy odor, expanding a recall the company started in January. J&J’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit said the latest recall involved 21 lots of medications, including Tylenol for children and adults, several forms of Benadryl allergy tablets and Motrin painkiller. But it did not say how many pieces were in each lot or give a total number of items involved. J&J spokeswoman Bonnie Jacobs said, “We do not have that information.”

Pain in Humans and Animals Expressed Through Facial Expressions

A new study by researchers from McGill University and the University of British Columbia shows that mice, like humans, express pain through facial expressions. The research will not only be an important tool in helping scientists ensure that laboratory animals don’t suffer unnecessarily, but could lead to new and better pain-relief drugs for humans.

Big Patent Expirations of 2010

While the much-talked-about patent cliff won’t hit until 2011, 2010 will still see patent expirations of some of the industry’s blockbuster drugs. Teva, Apotex, Mylan and a slew of other generic drugmakers will have a chance to put a dent in the sales of a number of brand meds this year – including Flomax and Aricept.

Pinch Away the Pain: Scorpion Venom Could Be an Alternative to Morphine

Scorpion venom is notoriously poisonous — but it might be used as an alternative to dangerous and addictive painkillers like morphine, a Tel Aviv University researcher claims.  Prof. Michael Gurevitz of Tel Aviv University’s Department of Plant Sciences is investigating new ways for developing a novel painkiller based on natural compounds found in the venom of scorpions. These compounds have gone through millions of years of evolution and some show high efficacy and specificity for certain components of the body with no side effects, he says.

Caffeine Intake Causes Headaches

New research findings indicate that people who consume large amounts of caffeine every day have a much higher chance of suffering from occasional headaches than persons with a low consumption of caffeine. These findings on caffeine and their connection to headaches however offer no obvious reason as to why headaches and caffeine are connected. The study further showed that the low consumption of caffeine is associated with a higher chance of the occurrence of chronic headaches, which are headaches that occur for fourteen or more days in a month.  Read more about Understanding the Global Pharmaceutical Market
