Variations in Taste Buds Linked to Obesity and Chronic Ear Inflammation

A recent report published by a journal dealing with Otolaryngology has indicated that children suffering from chronic inflammation in the middle ear can feel variations in their sense of taste which might simultaneously be connected to childhood obesity. Chronic otitis media with effusion is a persistent inflammation of the middle ear, in which effusion fluid is retained in the middle ear cavity.

Brain Enzyme that Erases/Brings Back Long-Term Memories

A new research study conducted by the National Institutes of Health has shown that rats have a typical type of brain enzyme that can either enhance or erase long-term memories. By increasing or decreasing the enzyme, it is possible to control the enhancement of a memory, or erase it completely.

An Apple a Day Really Keeps the Doctor Away!

You must have heard this saying a million times in your life! However, new research has emerged which actually proves that an apple a day will not just keep the doctor away, but also increase your lifespan. Researchers have announced that they have discovered the first evidence that consumption of a healthful antioxidant substance in apples extends the average lifespan of test animals. In fact, it increases the lifespan by almost ten percent. The new results, obtained with fruit flies – stand-ins for humans in hundreds of research projects each year – add weight to other such findings on apple antioxidants in other animal tests.

Obama’s Budget Delays Deep Cuts to Physician Payments

Although President Obama’s proposed $3.73 trillion budget for 2012 calls for more than $1 trillion in slashed spending, it protects doctors from steep cuts in their Medicare payments with a two year reprieve. The budget delays a scheduled 25 percent cut in the Sustainable Growth Rate, Medicare’s physician payment formula that was slated to go into effect in 2012, The Hill blog reports.

Stimulating the Brain’s Immune Response May Provide Treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease

A new target for the prevention of adverse immune responses identified as factors in the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has been discovered by researchers at the University of South Florida’s Department of Psychiatry and the Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair. The CD45 molecule is a receptor on the surface of the brain’s microglia cells, cells that support the brain’s neurons and also participate in brain immune responses.

U.S. Court Clears Generic Allegra Sale

India’s No.2 drugmaker Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd said a U.S. district court has cleared the sale of its generic version of Sanofi-Aventis’ allergy medicine Allegra D24, sending its shares up nearly 4 percent.  The U.S. District Court of New Jersey lifted an injunction passed last June against the Indian drugmaker from selling a copycat version of the drug, Dr Reddy’s said in a statement.

NPS Soars on Positive Ph3 Data for Orphan SBS Drug

NPS Pharmaceuticals says that it’s on track to file for regulatory approval of Gattex after a late-stage study involving 86 patients demonstrated promising results for reducing the need for IV feeding among a majority of patients with short bowel syndrome. NPS now plans to file in the second half of the year and the news quickly spurred a 30 percent hike in its stock price in pre-market trading.

Obama Will Not Refight Battle Over Healthcare Law

President Barack Obama said on Friday his healthcare overhaul is an important part of efforts to cut the budget deficit and insisted he will not “refight” the battle to pass the law. With emboldened Republicans vowing to repeal or replace the healthcare law he signed last March, Obama reiterated his case that the changes it brings are necessary to help rein in the price of the government-run Medicaid and Medicare insurance programs, a huge chunk of the U.S. budget deficit problem. The Congressional Budget Office said  the U.S. budget deficit will hit $1.48 trillion for fiscal 2011, up from a $1.07 trillion estimate in August.

Nasal Delivery of Anti-vomiting Drug Patent Won

There are many reasons cancer patients can dread chemotherapy. It might kill their cancer, but those who go through it often wonder if the cure is just as bad as the disease. Among the uncomfortable symptoms is chemotherapy-induced vomiting. Ahmedabad, India-based Lincoln Pharmaceuticals has been granted a patent for its nasal drug delivery system (NDDS) of ondansetron hydrochloride, which prevents or arrests vomiting.
